Entry Tests for Medical Colleges

Students who opt for Biology as their elective subject in intermediate have to pass an entrance test for securing admission into government or privately owned medical colleges or medical universities. Different types of entry tests are conducted by different institutions for granting admissions. These entry tests are compulsory and have substantial weightage in the merit calculation for admission. Owing to the importance of entrance exams, many academies and coaching centers all over the country offer their services for entry test preparation.

National Medical and Dental Colleges Admission Test (NMDCAT)

NMDCAT, the Entrance Test conducted by PMC for Public & Private Sector Medical & Dental Colleges of Pakistan is a standardized multiple-choice, computer-based examination which evaluates the skills required in the study of medicine such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and knowledge of the concepts and principles of natural, behavioral, and social sciences.

Structure of MDCAT

MDCAT consists of computer-based MCQs (multiple-choice questions) and therefore requires basic computer literacy. The test comprises 210 multiple-choice questions and its duration is 3.5 hours. There is no negative marking and a candidate needs to score a minimum of 65% marks to pass. The subject-wise distribution of MCQs is as follows:

  • 1. Biology 68
  • 2. Chemistry 56
  • 3. Physics 56
  • 4. English 20
  • 5. Logical Reasoning 10

Regarding the difficulty level of MCQs in the test, 20 percent of the MCQs will be easy, 60 percent moderate, and 20 percent hard.

Eligibility for NMDCAT

A candidate desiring to take admission in any medical college must have passed the HSSC/F.Sc. (Pre-Medical) examination from any Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education in Pakistan with not less than 60% unadjusted marks. Candidates of Punjab must have a domicile of Punjab. Pakistanis holding dual nationalities, overseas Pakistanis, and foreign national Pakistanis are also eligible for this test.

Syllabus for NMDCAT

The syllabus for NMDCAT has five portions including Biology, Chemistry, Physics, English, and Logical Reasoning. The syllabus of NMDCAT is set by Pakistan Medical Commission (PMC) and can be found on PMC’s website.

National University of Medical Sciences (NUMS)

National University of Medical Sciences (NUMS) also conducts a test for candidates who wish to take admission into the National University of Medical Sciences, its affiliated institutions and all military medical and dental colleges. NUMS Entry Test comprises two portions:

a. Subject-based Multiple-choice Questions

The test consists of 150 Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs). Time duration of the test is 150 minutes. Subject-wise breakdown of the test is as follows:

  • Biology 60
  • Chemistry 38
  • Physics 37
  • English 15

b. Psychological Test

The psychological test consists of 50 Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs) within a time duration of 30 minutes.

Qualifying for the psychological test is mandatory. However, the merit is based on the results of subject-based question paper results. There is no negative marking in this test.

Eligibility Criteria for NUMS

The candidates applying for admission into NUMS must have a minimum of 60% aggregate in Matric and HSSC each. The merit is calculated using the following weightage formula:

  • National MDCAT 50%
  • NUMS Admission Test 25%
  • Intermediate Marks 25%

Syllabus for NUMS Test

Aga Khan University (AKU) Admission Test

Aga Khan University is Pakistan’s first private sector university and is a renowned institution throughout the world. Candidates from all over Pakistan can apply for admission in Aga Khan University. The merit at AKU is calculated by several criteria including academic achievement, AKU Admission Test, and interviews. The time allowed for this test is 2 hours and 30 minutes. Subject-wise breakdown of MCQs for the test is as follows:

  • Biology 20 MCQs
  • Chemistry 20 MCQs
  • Physics 20 MCQs
  • Math Reasoning 20 MCQs
  • Science Reasoning 20 MCQs

There will be a negative marking of 0.25 marks for every wrong answer in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.
