Entry Test Preparation for Engineering

Students who choose mathematics at the intermediate level and dream to become future engineers need to be aware of their options after passing their intermediate exams. Following is a list of some of the top universities of Pakistan which offer admission to degrees in engineering:

University of Engineering and Technology (UET)

UET conducts its admission test under the name of ECAT (Engineering College Admission Test) which is a combined entrance test for admission to engineering institutions of Punjab. The following universities accept admission through ECAT:

Test Structure

ECAT consists of 100 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs). Each question carries 4 marks and there is a negative marking of 1 mark for a wrong answer. The duration of the test is 1.5 Hours (100 Minutes). The subject-wise distribution of questions for ECAT is as follows:

  • Mathematics 30
  • Physics 30
  • Chemistry/Computer Science 30
  • English 10

Eligibility Criteria

A candidate applying for admission in UET must have appeared in ECAT and secured at least 60% marks in his intermediate. The merit is calculated using the following formula:

F.Sc. Marks: 70% weightage

Entry Test: 30 % weightage

National University of Science and Technology (NUST)

NUST, a public research university with its main campus in Islamabad, is one of the top universities in Pakistan. It is under the administration of the Armed Forces of Pakistan and conducts its own test for admission to degrees in engineering.

Test Structure

The time allotted to the test is 180 minutes (3 hours). There are 200 MCQs (Multiple-choice questions) and each question carries 1 mark. There is no negative marking in this test.

The subject-wise distribution of questions for the test is as follows:

  • Mathematics 80
  • Physics 60
  • Chemistry/Computer Science 30
  • English 20
  • Intelligence 10

Eligibility Criteria

A minimum of 60% marks is required in matriculation or O levels and intermediate (F.Sc./A levels) for admission in NUST. The merit calculation is done as follows:

  • NUST Entry Test 75%
  • Intermediate 15%
  • Matriculation 10%

Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology (GIKI)

GIKI University is a private-sector research university located in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Admission in the university is decided on the basis of the score in admission test and academic record of the candidate. The university also accepts the results of SAT (in Mathematics and Physics).

Test Structure

The admission test comprises 80 MCQs (Multiple-choice questions), each carrying 3 marks. For every wrong answer in Physics and Mathematics, there is a negative marking of 1 mark. The

maximum time allowed for the test is 120 minutes (2 hours). The subject-wise distribution of questions is as follows:

  • Physics 30
  • Mathematics 30
  • English 20

Eligibility Criteria

Candidates having certificate of HSSC Pre-Engineering/ICS with 60% or above marks are eligible for applying at GIKI University. Applicants with a combination of Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry can apply for all programs including Computer Engineering or Computer Science, while applicants having studied Computer Science instead of Chemistry in their intermediate can apply for Computer Engineering or Computer Science only. The weightage of GIKI entry test and the candidate’s academic record is as follows:

  • Score in Admission Test/SAT 85%
  • HSSC 10%
  • SSC 5%

FAST National University

FAST National University is a federally chartered university founded in 2000. It is a prestigious university renowned for its impact in the software industry. The university have five campuses at Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad, Peshawar, and Chiniot-Faisalabad. Students desiring to take admission in FAST National University have to pass its admission test.

Test Structure

The online admission test is taken on a computer and thus an applicant needs to possess basic computer literacy. There is negative marking and the candidates are not allowed to use a calculator.

For BS Computer Science/Engineering, the subject-wise distribution is as follows:

  • English 10%
  • Analytical Skills & IQ 20%
  • Basic Math 20%
  • Adv. Math 50%

For BBA & BS (Accounting and Finance), subject-wise weightage is as follows:

  • English 10%
  • Essay Writing 15%
  • Analytical Skills & IQ 25%

Eligibility Criteria

A minimum of 60% marks are required in the Matriculation and Intermediate examinations. Candidates waiting for their intermediate part 2 result are also eligible to apply. The weightage of the test and the academic record of the candidate is as follows:

Intermediate Part 1 : 50%

Admission Test : 50%

COMSATS University

COMSATS is one of the leading universities of Pakistan. For admission to this university, a candidate has to undergo an NTS test. NTS NAT test is compulsory for admission to undergraduate programs, while NTS GAT (General) is required for admission to MS programs. For PhD programs, a candidate has to pass NTS GAT (Subject) Test. The result of NTS NAT is valid for 1 year while that of NTS GAT is valid for 2 years.

Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS)

PIEAS University is recognized as a notable federal public university devoted to providing higher education in many disciplines of engineering, natural sciences, and formal sciences. PIEAS offers admissions in six undergraduate (BS) Programs.

  • Chemistry/Computer 30

Eligibility Criteria

Candidates having a subject combination of Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry can apply for all BS programs including Engineering, Computer Science, and Physics, while those having a subject combination of Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science or Biology, Physics, and Chemistry can only apply for BS Computer Science and BS Physics.
